Mud Season

Mud season in New Hampshire and Vermont arrives in early spring, when winter loosens its grip and the frozen ground begins to thaw. As the snow melts and spring rains settle in, dirt roads soften into deep ruts and fields turn slick and saturated, making travel slow and sometimes unpredictable. Boots replace shoes, cars creep carefully along back roads, and locals learn to navigate puddles that seem to swallow whole tires. Yet mud season has its own quiet charm. Beneath the mess lies the promise of renewal—the smell of damp earth, the sound of rushing streams fed by melting snow, and the first hints that green fields and warmer days are not far away.
